Modelling

Recommended Posts

Howdy,

I was wondering, how did you guys learn to model?

Did you read books? If so can you recomend any for someone

who has very little clue about modeling?

I'm really interested in learning to model, but I don't know

where or how to start, as for software I use Gmax / renX,

very poorly, can't figure out the damn movement... One time

I can rotate it, but when I need to it seems like it won't go the

way I need it to... So I also use blender, not too bad in it, and

I downloaded maya ple, just to see what it was like.

Thanks for your time

Gmax can be really, really finnicky compared to 3ds max, because 3ds has some far easier to use aspects, such as rotating. I'm not sure if Gmax has rotate rings or not. they make it easy.

Well so far I really like maya ple, except for the damn writing through the object

window when you view solids or textures... Screw up my render? Fine, but that

really sucks, I like working in solid view <_<

Made my best model in it today! Bar weights lol

well my others were just cubes but... they were pretty and all...

If I had a pound for the amount of times your page has been linked on these forums :P That's what actually started me off modelling actually, It's progressed a bit since the first tank I did, and that was only a few months ago.

Hahaha either i'm stupid or I don't get along with gmax,

I can't figure out how to get the front of my cube to

extrude like yours to form the front of the tank

But great tutorial, thanks!

Edit: Ok I figured that out, twas my own stupidity, I was doing it wrong

Now I just need to get it to shape all perfect like yours...

hmm, I've been working on this for about a week. If you don't know what it is, its a Juggernaut from CNC3. I pretty much fell in love with it, and had to model it :P . Poly count is 103,156. A few of things to note, the cockpit is a temporary placeholder, and while doing the renders I noticed that the upper hull needs some work. It's about 60-70% done. Comments/crits very welcomed :)

I can't offer any real critique, but it does look awesome to me.

I downloaded the trial 3dsmax and trial photoshop today just for nostalgia's sake. I haven't done this in almost a year, but figured I'd see if I remember anything:

I don't know what I'm looking for response-wise, my infantry modelling abilities have always been poor because I don't understand the rigging step so I'm not really working "towards" anything when I model but I've made peace with that. I guess some tips would be nice, might as well learn to do it if I'm going to do C&C 3 modding. Came out better than I expected to be honest, it was easier to pick up again than I anticipated. Still feels off though.

Comes in at about 550 polies, I'd assume too many for C&C 3 infantry but this guy will probably never get to that point anyway. If it ever did I'd end up pumping up the contrast, I remember from Generals that if you crank it way up before putting it ingame the unit benefits from it immensely.

Oh yeah, based on the Land Warrior system and inspired by GRAW 2 (best 360 game out there, in my opinion). I actually just copied the face off a promo pic for GRAW, not that you can see it well from that angle and distance.

@ Weston

Brilliant recreation. I don't care for the Juggernaut as much as you do, but it looks great.

@ Accele

The level of detail on the rifle makes the level of detail on the actual infantryman pale in comparison, although that may just be me.

Second high poly rifle I've made. I had a go at a harrier and a tornado, with not much luck, I'll stick to guns for now I think.

He made that statement because the admins are annoyed by people who don't read the rules, which I believe are presented to you when you register.

(Don't bite at the guys that run the place. It's not a good idea)

It's like I said i'm not trying to be a prick, that just annoyed me.

Sorry if it offended anyone. I hope this wasn't at me.

He is an admin. <- Good for him, he seems very knowlagable, and helpful, so he should be.

Any more questions? Hmm... Not at the moment.

No? I'm not 14 I can answer my own questions, without help.

Good boy. ... ... Oh god the pm this line would bring if you weren't an administrator...

I feel I can tolerate the attitude toward the admins for a little while longer, but I can't help but notice that you still haven't taken Flyby's original comment as a hint.
