World Of Warcraft - Another Expansion

The title is horrible. (Anyone else immediately think of Rise of the Witch-King?)

Not moved/shocked. Don't care. But WoW freaks are going to ofcourse eat it up. Seems that blizzard figured out that expansions can make even MORE money than just the regular stuff.

Although I have the game installed, along with the first expansion (only downloaded and installed it since my friend said I could play for free) I have not actually ran the game yet. And I do not think I plan too.

This game, not saying it isn't good or else 8M people wouldn't play it, but is a waste of time.

To get to level 100,000,000,000 you need to spend at least 4.5 Life times to get there. Personally, not only do I have a life, but I rather man at least $35 / month then spend it.

Please note, I am going over board with many facts of the game.

Just so you know. ^_^

I played WoW for some time, I haven't touched the game in a long time but have played the BC expansion. I will also play the new one but like with BC, once I get done with the new zones and some instances (I don't raid) Ill stop playing until the next expansion. Its a fun game to say the least and I do plan to pace myself. But I wont kill myself over it like I did before BC.

MMORPGs leak pure evil (and as such they are a marketing executives wet dream). Anything so deliberatly aimed at keeping you addicted to something so meaningless is horrific. This Xpack is the logical progession of the genre. It makes perfect cold calculating sense. As long as WOW is popular it will persis in this state of stagnation, its graphics and gameplay becoming more and more horribly outdated just as each new Xpack gives it one more blast on the defibrulator to keep it ticking along.

I enjoy WoW, but I cancel the account when I'm at school so I only play like 1/3 of the year. Anyway, I've said it before but it is true still... Blizzard could charge $20 to raise the level cap 5 levels and it would be a best-seller. From my experience lifeless idiots that spend all day playing that game is a good 90% of the game, and they would absolutely buy it.

There will probably be an X-pack every 12 to 18 months from here on out. I hated the last X-pack with their fukkin space berries and Naga plz. The raiding was shitty (other than Kara), the rep grinds were shitty, most of the new 5 mans were shitty and the arena was the most unbalanced abomination ever thought up. I hated it. So did a lot of other people, half my guild quit around the same time i did.

Blizz will have to compete with the upcoming Warhammer On-line and that is why they are doing this so soon after the last one, and hopefully fix the mistakes they made with the Boring Crusade.

That being said, I'm glad i never deleted my toon, i'll probably play it again with the new x-pack. There is something about killing the walking dead i just find so entertianing...

Zombies motherfukkers... ZOMBIES

I've said it before and ill say it again, calling any video game a waste of time on a messege board dedicated to modding video games is hypocritical. Play what you enjoy, gaming should be about entertianment.

I disagree Doc. I will qualify my statement:

Modding a game is a creative process. It has merit as an artform.

"Normal" games aren't meaningless either. They often have gripping storylines, gripping gameplay that stretches your brain and your reflexes. The plot progresses. Even shooting friends in a fragfest like CS has some meaning as a fun way to unwind. There is no grind in these games. No requirement to devote yourself to "getting to a higher level" before you are allowed to play with the cool toys. I don't really object to the MMO gameplay propper, its the wrapper of ongoing grinding that really gets to me.

Even worse, the gnd to "reach higher levels" becomes for many people an end in itself. You unlock more stuff so you can get more stuff. Its a treadmill. Its meaningless in itself. The fun of playing PvE or PvP is seperated by gulfs of hours.

I speak from experience. I played eve for quite a while. I look back on it with regret. The only time I really enjoyed myself was at the end when I joined a dedicated PvP corporation. We got cheap ships and went and blew stuff up. Our best raid took out a Marachiel, which is itself a symbol of the utter futility of MMOs. Destroying it helped me to see just how shit eve is. Its one of the hardest ships to get in the game. It represents some poor sod probably spending at least a month of grinding through dull missions day in day out to aquire it. I noosed the bastard, and we mobbed it with maybe 30 tiny ships. He died fast :P. Who wants a game where a month of horrible boring work can be taken from you in minutes by a bunch of bored bastards out for a thrill (and yes it felt awesome).

However to achieve this meant devoting several hours to gearing up for that mission. Even though it was pre-arranged, we spent maybe an hour waiting for people to stage, then yet more time going through maybe 30 systems to sneak through the enemy lines. Then 10 minutes of killing fun. Then the same process in reverse to get our guys out of their terrirtory. A whole evening of work for about 10 minutes of gameplay. I want those figures reversed else I'm not playing. That is why I want to make mods that let you do that. In blitz there is no waiting. You don't have to blow a month before you can see a Maus. It's all about the gameplay and none about the grind.

MMOs are retarded. I like playing with a lot of people in space battles, but eve took the piss. A fleet game where you can just battle would be awesome. Why does anyone put up with all the meaningless dross (and subscriptions) around it? It's an addiction and it's for mugs.

I agree. Otherwise i would never make maps, and i do take pride in a well made map. I never said it was a waste of time.

Again, i never said they were meaningless.

WoW has all those things on a very deep level. Some of the neatest stories ive heard were told during quests. WoW is very into telling well thought out, sometimes creepy, sometimes funny stories. Granted, its all fantasy crap, but i like fantasy crap. Leveling was actually more fun than being max level because of this.

Reflexes are important in any game, especially in WoW; The caster is gunna melt your face, you better get that interupt off and stop the cast before he does so or youre dead meat. PvP is just like CS fragfest, but instead of machine guns you shoot fireballs from you hands or go stabby stabby with your daggers. In PvP there is no grind anymore, there used to be, and it was awfull, now you can literally play 30 minutes a week and get the cool toys. Hell, you can join a battle ground and sit in a corner jumping, alt tab, search for porn and still reap the rewards by doing nothing at all, it's kinda stupid but at least Blizz was smart enough to remove the grind from this aspect of the game. Sadly, I never really enjoyed PvP.

That actually sounds like a lot of fun imo. But i can relate, i used to spend 4 hours grinding materials for one raid; potions, food, etc and then spend 4 more hours in the raid. And then there was no garuantee i would get treasure at the end of the raid, random loot ftl.

Unlike PvP where you can pretty much log in and start playing, PvE is very much a grind and part of the reason i stopped playing. It stopped being entertianment and became more like work. Apparently the Devs recognized this and have started changing it kinda like they did for PvP and i hope they change it more before the next X-pack, because i want to play it again, but i want it to be fun again like when i started playing instead of what it evolved into. I want to log in, spend maybe 30 minutes preparing instead of 4 hours and go kill the bad guy. So i understand where you are coming from and agree.

Lately i have been playing Civ IV: Warlords with the 1939 mod. Very very entertianing, i love "empire building" type games. ive been at war with the world playing the same game for almost two weeks. It's freeking epic, but no one cares that i have been pushing into Russia and they keep pushing me back. No one gives two shits. Too everyone else its meaningless, to me its entertianment.

I'll put it in context.

Me: "Hey Lori, i FINALLY took Moscow from these Commie Pigs"

Lori: "So?"

me: *grumbles under my breath so she cant hear me* "ggrrrr"

Lets take counter strike for a second, i hate games like this with a passion; twitchers all over the place always freeking jumping up and down so you can never get a good shot at them, zerg, die, spawn, rinse, repeat, This is what most FPS games i have played are like, and i hated it. I think first person shooters are horrible games, you could say i despise these games even more than the people who despise WoW, but they sell well. so people must find em fun. I cant really call it a waste of time.

My point is you can't really call one video game a waste of time, even a treadmill MMO or a twitcher FPS, unless you are willing to call all video games a waste of time. I dont consider any gaming a waste of time, not even Hello Kitty Adventure Island, as long you are having fun, thats all that matters. When it stops being fun, thats when it becomes a waste of time, and you should just move on to a new game.

BF2142 an FPS Im pretty sure you have to play a lot to unlock all the weapons. there's one for a grind other then mmos.

I can understand the lvling in wow. If you play your class just out of the box at lvl 60 or 70 you will suck for about the same amount of time it would have taken you to get to lvl 1-60 or 70. The classes in the game have a shitload of abilities and it takes time to learn them.

The game isn't bad its a game that takes time to play and to learn and to be good at. Another example of this is in any RTS when you play through the campaign. mission number one you never have all your "toys" you have to build up to that.

WoW is a great game weather you play it or not is up to you. but for those of us who have played it for 2 years (yes me) I didn't play it because it sucked. You just need a break here and there.

"It stopped being entertianment and became more like work"

My sentiments exactly. Work but without the pay at the end...

In eve the fighting, i.e. gameplay, was great. The team organised fleet battles kicked ass. I just resent the fact that it took so long to aquire ships and skills and then organise. It's pointless, since its just virtual posturing. It would be possible to design the game differently to eliminate that.

If you do world pvp the game is very fun. The level grinding becomes work, but nothing is as entertaining as ganking and then getting ganked and then getting people together to trample a town (or city, if you're lucky).
