American Presidential Elections

Recommended Posts

I say au contraiare, right now, this is the LAST moment to pull out - when we just assembled the peace. As it stands now, the peace is still fragile. Many of the Awakening Council members are on US payroll, the (mainly Shiite atm) Iraqi government hesitant to accept so many Sunnis into the Army - this is indeed one place where we can lay pressure on, but really, the change has to happen at the next election, with more Sunni MPs. Also, much of the very popular (and very successful financially) micro-loan program is financed by us too. US troops/commanders also oftentimes play diplomat between tribes and clans, liasons between tribes and the government, et cetra. US troops also are oftentimes a major link that a sheik will have with their people. Our role is now very diplomatic these days - in a way thats a good thing, or a bad thing, depending on your viewpoint. However, leaving now just throws all this work and blood up into the air for nothing. We cannot leave now. Yes, we can pressure Iraq to spend more of their oil reserves on the country, or at least repatriate the military, but honestly, we committed to the war. We're the ones who need to see it through just as much as the Iraqis.

Also, ulp, election day is upon us.

Imagine that...8 years of Bush. Has it really been that long ?

The issue is a 'loss' for America at this point in time does not equate to a 'loss' for Iraq. It's quite conceivable we could pull out in the next months with 'loose ends', and get scolded non-stop by hawks at home for it, and still have the Iraqi's pull themselves through without the target rich environment of Western personnel.

It's a bit like having Superman on your baseball team when you're in the hole. Sure, you win as long as he's around, but is it worth the field being wrecked by Lex Luthor's doomsday device?

Also, in other news, McCain's one great hope, PA, is being projected by CNN for the O man.

I'd like to think the time I spent hanging door flyers today helped with that. :)

In fact, according to the CNN interactive electoral map with their picks for states already voted... As long as Obama wins California, Washington, Oregon and Florida... McCain can win EVERYTHING else and still lose.

Okay, now all he needs is WA and CA to win... damn, the midwest is turning blue, this may be a landslide.

Obama won, happy dance. If you're guy, McCain or otherwise lost, sorry, but at least give the O man a chance. If you're a whiny sore little bitter twat though, you can stand in that line waaaay over there. It's a queue to 'go fuck yourself'.

At least we don't have to worry about the Bible belt expanding with Congressional support anymore.

Coincidentally, I voted for John Henry Eden.

Does this mean that it's my turn to blame the President for all of the evils in the world now? :P

Coincidentally, I voted for John Henry Eden.

Win. If I had known the landslide would have been this bad, I would have written him in just for the LULZ.

I love you Monkey...

In more important news, Hillary isn't president. In a time when everyone calls for unity, she gives the partisan speech treatment faster than Pelosi could hope too, and almost as blatantly as Fox could...

"Tonight, we are celebrating an historic victory for the American people. This was a long and hard fought campaign but the result was well worth the wait.

Together, under the leadership of President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and a Democratic Congress, we will chart a better course to build a new economy and rebuild our leadership in the world. And I look forward to doing all that I can to support President Obama and Vice President Biden in the difficult work that lies ahead.

For too long, middle class families in this country have felt invisible, struggling alone as wages stagnate, jobs disappear, and the costs of daily life climb upward. In quiet, solitary acts of citizenship, American voters gave voice to their hopes and their values, voted for change, and refused to be invisible any longer."

I'll be over in the corner clinging to my guns and Bible and hiding my paycheck.

Meh.

You and the guys from work I hung out with tonight. It's a scary thing being the lone populist/centrist in a bunch of militant, neo-con, rednecks.

Why would I be butthurt over McCain losing? Seriously, this has to be the fastest capitulation in history. McCain set himself up to lose by being who he is.

Just...Obama is now President...fuck. Not that I didn't think it wouldn't happen, but still...seeing it as untenable fact.

Meh. Whats done is done.

Obama didn't run on any kind of platform of "I'm black, vote for me." People have their reasons, but I suspected it helped more with the image that he was different than anything else. Besides, anyone black who voted for him due to blackness doesn't exactly seem like a potential Ron Paul or McCain supporter anyway.

Remember that the Democrats do well among poor urban demographics. Black people are predominantly in this group. Race was an issue but Democrats always get really high %s of the black vote. I doubt race was trumping the economy in people's order of priorities right now.

It is about time that the USA gets de-polarized, because the bitter partiscim is really ruining it.

It prevents good pragmatic solutions to be developped that hover over both Democratic and republican territory.

To my surprize, the ghost of McCarthy still wanders through the streets of america, even after almost 60 years...

For a starters, soclalism is NOT = Communism. There is good and bad in socialism, just as there is good and bad in capitalism.

The art of good government is to pick out the best of both social visions and balance them out.

I truely hope that, for once, the new president will be able to reach across partyborders and put the right man in the right place, not because he's of the corresponding party, but because he's capable in performing that task. If that fails, then the huge wave of hope we see now on Tv (here in europe anyway), will be crushed by dissapointment.
