    All Is Lost

Scenario? Ultimately, it is a question, what information is of the most value to you? You don't need anything (except Medicine) It's about what you want not what you need. How to run the Island and how to provide food and other resources is a question not relevent to the scenario. Everything needed is provided for. If for people are living in a home on the Island than the space allocated to them for a garden will be sufficient for them to grow enough food. It doesn't matter though because this is a different question to the one asked.

the Island is 27 kilometers by 15... that's how big I would want it anyway. Shelter is already provided for... that includeds hurricane shelters. With 500 people, i'll suspect there will be a doctor amongst them, plus, plenty of time to study the medical books. As for aggressive animals? I already said I would have a gun. Over time we'd hopefully gain a little more courage and learn to kill them with hand made weapons. I would not use fields to grow my crops.... i'd just have them planted around the houses in the gardens. I'm not sure if you've ever grown fruit or vegetables, but I have. We really didn't spend much time on them at all... They grow by themselves. Do you actually believe that humans are required for nature to work. Humans did not create fruit and vegetables... Nature did. They did not and do not, need our help to grow. Its just faster and more efficient if we help them along. @Mehman: Petrolium based Fertilizers or any other commercially based fertilizers are not essiential for plant growth. You grow plants/fruit using natural fertilizer... that is animal droppings and such. Today, many of our illnesses are caused by unhealthy diets. Fruit, vegetables and fish strenghen the immune system and help fight off infections and virusus... Historically, people fell ill due to the fact of not understanding what was causing them to become sick. It seems no one has heard of Permaculture (Permanent Agriculture), it does not require man made fertilizers (we're running outta easily available oil incase ya hadn't noticed = "peak oil". Permaculture is based on the way Nature works. There are many people in Australia, New Zealand and around the world who have massive fruit and vege gardens that they don't really work on at all... Nature does it all (still grows even it the Australian draughts due to a clever system of storage). Notice I included a book on permaculture (even thought the Island has already been set up to provide food). Finally, what I'm asking in this topic is, in the scenario outlined, What knowledge would you take with you and what 5 items would you also take? Most of the responses talk about info for surviving. This info is irrelevant. The Island is already set up for you to inhabit. As far as I can tell, ony sickness would be a problem... Everything else is taken care of.

Huh.... think twice... Unless you want to live in stoneage fashion, being able to make metals like iron/steel is essential, as sasquatch already illustrated. I'd go further doh then the mere "craft-tools" Once I have all the manual tools needed, i'd continue to expand, built heavy manufacturing machinery, a steam engine or even a crude combustion engine, utility vehicles (lorry, crane, dozer, etc...) maybe build a small electricitynet 10-15years from now. But as Korona rightfully noted, for real industrialisation, you need easy access , such as surface mining...But then again, you did not restrict anything from the environment in your hypothetuical situation. Actually, I would want to live in a stone age type fashion with a few useful changes. I would not attempt to recreate our current civilization. I would only use the tools for any gardening that need to be done (houses have all ready been built). Accasionally houses would need to be built but some form of population control would likely be put in place. I am surprised that your so keen to get back into what would be called the "old ways" (if were heading to an Island). Having a home ready built, and food just growing naturally, gives us alot of free time to get to know each other and have fun. Most people I know work to pay the rent and put food on the table. Under my idea, the concept of rent wouldn't exist and food would be free... no work. Just kick back, relax, have fun. Play sport. Learn....

Hmm... interesting. I've had abit of a look round for stuff on Blacksmithing glass working etc etc... haven't found anything yet. Although it was in the evening (it's now 10:00pm here) so not many places to go.

Lol, thanks for the reply. Although when I thought of munitions, I thought you might want them to blow away natural obsacles in your way on the Island (in which case you wanna use thermite most of the time (rocks)). You won't need to be street fighting. The Island is simply owned by your group. Then again... if you intend on going back to the mainland for supplies you might wanna make some weapons... although my senario says you are planning on the assumption you will not be able to go back for along time... if ever. With Smithing, I'd expect the people in the community to make enough tools for everyone to have them... after all, you only really need gardening tools and a couple of axes and shovels....

@flyby: Would you even want to develope though? With development often comes things to worry and stress over... @ Sasquatch: Liked your list. I never thought about boooks to do with Blacksmiths and glass work. Actually, I thinK I might go look for some to satisfy my curiousity. You happen to know any good titles of books on the subjects you listed? I think Munitions would be difficuilt though... it's gonna be had to get Iron to make Iron Oxide out of... or patassium Nitrate or even coal... Also, do you think it would be important to have books that help you come up with ideas for how to interact with people... do you want to use a money type system on the Island? if so you probably wanna know a little bit about money and different ways it can be set up... or This is why I included books on Philosophy. Philosophy can be very useful for realising problems before they get to big... and understanding other people (you gonna want ya community to get along).

I think some people missed the point. Food water and shelter is already taken care of. You don't need any books on how to collect food... other people already have them. You already have your village set up, it has fruit and vegetables growing everywhere (every home has a up and running garden that has fruit and veges for all seasons). Altimately you don't need anymore knowledge to survive. Everything is set up (you've been preparing the Island for 5 years). This actually stems from a different topic that is about setting up a new civilization (that you've already built houses for everyone that is surrounded by organic food) on a small Island occupied by 1000 people (Things to think about Law: (if any), Medicine, Teaching, Community Values, Governance etc etc). The Ultimate aim is to make a community that is happy. Happiness doesn't always meen advancing towards our current age. Science is in general useful. Even if you don't always have technology. Chemistry, Biology and Physics is still important as it helps you understand your surrounding, Maths... I'm told it's useful? Science books aren't easy to read. Dictionaries would be very useful. Permaculture (how to set up gardens that are sustainable), Philosophy (helps to be open minding about things), Education (to help you master teaching others). I would probably strike one Philosophy book and put a History book in there (brief History of all time or something).

Imagine that it a weeks time civilization as we know it is going to callapse. Vast amounts of knowledge are going to be lost forever. This is due to an evil dictator who wants to keep all the knowledge to himself so he can control the world. You and a small number of others have decided to leave mainstream civilization and head out into the bush (on a tropical island in the middle of nowhere) where you have a small village set up. Food is not going to be a problem, neither is shelter. The rest of civilization is preparing for a massive war... you and you group are going to be alone for a long time... perhaps forever... On the boat you have brought to sale to the Island you have just enough room left for 20 books. What books would you grab to take with you to the Island (so you hold on to some knowledge). I would grab: 3 Philosophy Text Books. 2 Medical Text Books 2 Chemistry Textbooks 2 Physics Textbooks 2 Maths Textbooks 2 Biology Textbooks 1 Permaculture Textbook 5 Dictionaries (standard, Medical, Maths, Chemistry, Biology) 1 Education textbook I will expand on why I chose these soon. Feel free to be specific about what you'd choose and why you chose each book. Also what difficultly level the book is at (In my case the Science books each have an introduction one and a more advanced one) You are also have room for 5 additional (luxury) items: Hip Flask (what the hell) Solar powered torch Rifle 200 round ammo box Sturdy knife. Remember... food is not a problem or shelter... it's all ready set up. There are no major survival problems although dental could be a problem...

    Oh My F**king G*d!

As far as I am aware, they did plot to only attack (and presumably kill) government officials. They are political activist which generally means they where probably gonna attack people who make policy.... Then again it actually does kinda bring them under the definition of terrorist because I remember reading the Terrorists Supression Act when I was doing statute law and it mentioned something along the lines of if you are trying to force a government to change policy by hurting people then you are considered a terrorist. (This is a very bad paraphrase and may be a little incorrect but I can't be bothered going through my books to grab the act). Despite this, I still turn to general meaning to define what a terrorist is and what a traitor is. To me, a terrorist is any person who attacks civilians of a foriegn country in an attempt to change that coutries policies. A traitor, in my view, is any person who carries out attacks against civilians/government officials of his own country in an attempt to change that countries policy. I am aware those definitions are technically wrong but, (I have just asked my flatmates what they believe a trator/terrorist is) and they basically said the same thing (i'm ignoring the fact that usually traitors are helping "the other side"). Ordinary definition succeeds over technical definitions and as people over here have suggested "treason" is the appropriate charge, I would say you could say that those people can be considered traitors. Yes, I am aware the act defines what is to be considered a terrorist and that trumps ordinary usage but it doesn't change the fact the in my opinion, they should be charged with treason.

    Oh My F**king G*d!

Which, in my view, means they should be charged for treason rather than under the Terrorism Supression Act. They are tratiors.

    Oh My F**king G*d!

Terrorists in NEW ZEALAND? Now that ain't right... Seriously though, it sounds more like treason to me. The article doesn't say much, but over here the TV news has said the group has tested bombs and has aquired a small arsenal of weapons and military equipment (including homemade (I assume) napalm and molotov cocktails). http://rawstory.com/news/dpa/New_Zealand_p...r_10142007.html It's just a pitty we don't have the death penalty :(

    Modding

my version is legal, but I'm using a crack while my cd is being borrowed (essentially making it illegal I suppose). There is no crack for a 1.07 patch to the Kane Edition.

    Modding

I have the Kane Editon, I cannot get it to work patched to 1.08. Therefore I can not use the SDK as it only works with games patched to 1.-8 or higher... I have looked through the XML files (from the SDK), I have access to them. Not sure if that's all that's needed. I may not be an expert, but i'm not a noob either. When you say advanced knowledge, do you mean the modder, is some way alter the games engine? Knows a specific language or something?

How was the wall mod done? It made walls buildable before the SDK had even been released.... different program maybe?
