Gunman Kills 31 On Virginia Tech Campus

Considering the fact that the US population outnumbers Netherlands about 188 to 1 (approx), likelihood of mass shooting occurring in US is much more likely than one occurring in Netherlands simply due to the laws of probability. To put things into perspective, Florida's population is slightly larger than the Netherlands. When was the last time you heard about a mass shooting in Florida?

So We Have No Idea, Really

I don't really like all this crossover stuff, because it's usually really hard to get right. What do a squad of Army special forces specialising in defusing tense political situations, an international team of counter terrorists, and a spy for the NSA have to do with each other? Isn't that what GRAW stands for?

    Democracy Cannot Be Enforced

Based on what I'm reading in this thread, I agree. Russia's a bit messed up right now. I never claimed that a public open space is equivalent to a structured institution. This example was simply used to support my position that while free speech, as a pillar of democracy, should be held in high regard, it shouldn't go completely unregulated either. To back this up I stated the difference between public and nonpublic forums. How can there? You are right. Of course I agree. We've all read TJ's Declaration.

Gunman Kills 31 On Virginia Tech Campus

I'm with Mastermind on this one, that guns are so rampant on the black market (at least in the US) that outlawing hand guns will only affect law abiding citizens who have the right to defend themselves. Agreed. That makes sense, the way you put it. Wow...... crazy stuff. :[

Gunman Kills 31 On Virginia Tech Campus

Apparently so. From the BBC - Seriously though, where were the cops investigating the first incident? Surely they should have rushed over to the other place immediately?

Gunman Kills 31 On Virginia Tech Campus

Looks like we have a rebel on our hands. :P Back on topic though, I'm still waiting to hear what the police were doing during those two hours.....

Gunman Kills 31 On Virginia Tech Campus

And my point is that it does matter whether you have a gun or your bare hands. Someone armed with bare hands is MUCH easier to stop than someone armed with a gun. You can only do so much with intent, but with a powerful enough vehicle to carry that intent.....

Gunman Kills 31 On Virginia Tech Campus

Huh? I'm just saying that it just seems unusual for such a crime to be done in such a way - I've always thought the whole "pistol in each hand" thing was impractical and only useful in movie gunfights. (Even in games such as CS they are ineffective.) This incident proves me wrong - that, provided there are enough targets, this can be tragically effective.

What you are saying is completely irrelevant. Obviously, taking away guns will not stop violent deaths. However, taking away guns (which I believe to be impossible and unconstitutional) would mean that there would be less power to commit violent deaths in the hands of, er, evil doers. To take your example to the extreme, I could justify personal ownership of nuclear weapons because, after all, if I have the ability to kill a person with a pencil, it is my right to be able to kill with a nuke.

Gunman Kills 31 On Virginia Tech Campus

What I don't understand is that a shooting was first reported to the police at 7 AM. Two hours later the gunman goes on an even bigger killing spree, murdering 30 and committing suicide. WTF HAPPENED DURING THOSE TWO HOURS? Shouldn't the campus have been swarming with cops? I mean, I know the campus is huge, but still. It's common sense that if you have a killer on the loose you take precautions. Perhaps precautions were taken, but none of the news reports I've read mention any of them. Impossible. There is no realistic way to do this - Guns have been entrenched in American culture ever since its inception. There are only two ways guns can be taken away - quickly and all at once, or through a gradual process. Neither is feasible: If some amendment was to be added to the Constitution overnight banning gun ownership by civilians, it would have as much effect as the 18th Amendment which established prohibition of alcohol. If it was done gradually through legislative means, it would take so long that support will diminish over time. After such a horrible incident as this, people will be clamouring NO MORE GUNS NO MORE GUNS but over time, it will start losing support again. Any progress made will be unraveled by conservative groups and maybe even civil liberties activists. Nah, apparently he was using two pistols simultaneously. Obviously been watching too many movies.

    Democracy Cannot Be Enforced

Well then I wholeheartedly agree that the police action was unjustified.

    Democracy Cannot Be Enforced

Well if it was authorised, that's a whole different story. One citizen's liberty (freedom to...) cannot be allowed to abridge the liberty of another (freedom from...), and to that end governments establish regulations to guide these. I'm not an expert on other governments, but in the US, the "Constitution protects the right to speak, but it does not give people the right to communicate their views to everyone, every place, at every time they wish." I'm a firm believer of free speech, but such things should be done through proper channels. For example, an American high school may be a public institution but that doesn't make it a public forum. Understandably, you can't just barge in a classroom and spew bullshit and later defend your actions as "free speech".

    Democracy Cannot Be Enforced

I don't know whether the current Russian government is a democracy or not, but from the way the caption in the BBC link reads, I think nothing wrong was done. Police have every right to put down any unauthorised protests. Some people seem to confuse liberty with anarchy...

    Uh...huh? Iran Supplies Sunnis?

    Um, that's like saying "that's not a rectangle, that's a square".

    British Sailor "arrest" By Iran

We can only imagine what would have happened if the British sailors and marines had fought back. Against the odds, chances are they would have been, for lack of a better word, slaughtered... the media would take it and blow to even greater proportions, and the UK population might have been galvanised into going to war with Iran..... And yeah, as much as I would like for there to be a rescue attempt, it's just too implausible. THe last time something like that was tried (when the US sent a team in to rescue the embassy hostages), it scrued up badly... Sure the SAS as experience with hostage rescue (they had their own hostage crisis as well back in the 80s) that was on home turf.
