this is really pissing me off. i can't believe this.
okay. ever since installing the new ATI X800 card i've got, i can play games on high graphics settings and even play some games i can't play on my old card. BUT, in some games: Tribes Vengeance, Trackmania Sunrise, TM Nations, HL2 Lost Coast and the new Flatout 2, i get some keyboard and mouse button lag. this is not a low FPS issue as in Flatout2, ATITrayToole reports more than 40FPS. but some times the car just keeps turning even though i've released the key. sometimes the car won't turn at all. sometimes, in TribesV, i noticed that the key strocks gets pilled together, like after A, i pressed W, S D. and the charactor keeps going to the left and then even though i don't press anything. she goes forward, backward and right. i've googled the problem, it is caused by the ATI Tray Tool. so i just disabled its auto-startup and disabled any overclocking. after restarting, i still can't complete a single Flatout 2 race by skill. so im asking, anyone here has had simluar problem with the ATI TrayTool/driver?? and how to solve it? |

You consider HL2 Lost Coatst a game?
The have you tried getting a new keyboard driver? Or something... Perhaps changing USB ports, I know some of my USB's work better than others... |

You sure it's plugged in all the way? that the connection didn't get a bit loose?

Talking of being plugged in... Are you sure the keys are in right? Is the wire showing signs of damage? (Don't let your hamster run round on the desk... I found that the hard way.) Maybe its just a case of the buttons in the keyboard having to much cack and dust on them that they either stick or seize up.

yes, latest ATI 6.7 driver
no, after getting the graphics card, i just downloaded HL2 Lost Coast to see what HDR looks like. yes, it is fully plugged in, that was the first think i've checked. the wire is fine, and i don't own hamsters. how can i get a new keyboard driver? don't they just plugin and type away? as i've said, i suspect it's todo with the ATI driver/card. because it was fine on my old Geforce 4 Ti4400 (though crappy graphics on TribesV, but no lag) |

This is a very odd issue. However, I may have a solution. Open ATI Tray Tools. Under the 3D section, there is an option called "Flip Queue Size", which tells the CPU to render ahead a number of frames if the GPU stalls. If it is set rediculously high (at 6 frames or something) it can cause hundreds of milliseconds of input lag. Set it to 0 and see what it does.
It is quite likely that installing a new ATI card has caused the Flip Queue Size option to reset to a rediculously high number, and this option specifically is known to cause input lag. This post has been edited by Sc4Freak: Aug 9 2006, 3:33 PM |

ok, just had a perfectly non-keyboard-lagging game in Flatout2.... wow great game.
anyway, i solved the problem by using Process Explorer to delete 2 of the ATI Tray Tool's process, both has simular name, but one is under the services.exe process tree, while the other is not. according to the descroption given by Porcess Explorer, it says it's ATI Tray Tool's hot-key polling thingy. so now, im going to disable the hot-key function in ATT, and disable the FPS counter |

damn it, it's not the ATI Tray Tool that's causing the problem. the ati2evxx.exe is a driver related process!
QUOTE ati2evxx.exe is a process installed alongside ATI Display Adapters and provides additional configuration options for these devices. This program is non-essential process to the running of the system, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems. i knew it, ATI's drivers are dudgy, should have gotten a nVidia card instead |

Eh? ati2evxx.exe is indeed an ATI driver process. However, I have never seen a case where it has caused the problems you describe. The only problems I've ever heard about this process was that it sometimes messed with overclocking in third party programs.
Since none or very few of all the people using ATI cards have this problem, I have to say that the problem lies between the chair and keyboard, and not the computer or drivers themselves. |

very funny.
why would ATI have a key poller anyway. i have already uninstalled the CCC, also ATT, i don't want to control what the card does! just work. god damn it. whereas a nVidia card, you install the driver, no stupid .NETframwork to install, no key poller running in the background while i just want to play a game. Sc4Freak, you seems to support ATI very much, i guess you have a ATI card running. do you see that process in Process Explorer/Task manager? No. I disabled it because it was messing with profiles and overclocking in ATITool, ATITool has some bugs that the creators have yet to work out. The hotkey poller allows for certain settings to be binded to shortcut keys, so you don't have to manually go in and change stuff every time. I heard that Nvidia is also moving to the .NET framework. So you'll probably be installing the .NET framework with an Nvidia card anyway. Its just that ATI transitioned to the .NET framework much earlier than Nvidia did. why didn't you tell me about all the bugs when i got the card, sc4freak?
moving to .NetFramework means using Visual Studio to programme a interface. and that may means losing Linux's support. god, there's planty of good programming language out there, why use Visual Studio? why not Borland C++? no, don't do it nVidia, nooooo.......... |

What, you mean the bugs that both companies have?
If you look at the ATI Catalyst release logs, and the equivalent for Nvidia, you'll find that both companies have their bugs. In fact, I'll go as far as to make the assertion that Nvidia has even more bugs. Just check the release logs. Besides, Visual Studio is an IDE. You can use Visual Studio to write, debug and compile a whole host of languages, such as C++, C#, Visual Basic .NET, J# and a few others that I can't remember. And Borland C++ is also an IDE (or just a compiler, can't remember which) In addition to this, both ATI and Nvidia offer drivers and support for Windows XP, Windows XP x64, Windows Vista x86, Windows Vista x64, a whole bunch of other version of Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. And they all work. |

Visual Stuido is a crappy software developing tool that is written badly. the reason i said Visual Studio was because i don't know which programming language they used. Borland C++ is another programming language developing kit, whereas Borland C++ Builder is a compiler.
as for the bugs, i've never had a ATI card, while having a nVidia card (Geforce 4 and 2) i've never had any problem with the hardware or the driver. but as soon as i buy my first ATI card, its driver caused problems in gaming. |
