Tanks would be more usefull in urban warfare if:
They toned down the main gun sizes, going instead for a smaller bore, rapid-fire weapon. You can't really hit a guy in a building with a 125mm cannon without demolishing the building, just giving him more cover.
More anti-mine measures to counter IEDs.
Smaller, with multiple vantage points for infantrymen to counter ambushes.
And, of course, an anti-RPG system, like what the Israelis use.

Still, many tanks have been destroyed. Even the great Merkava tank.

Hovercars FTW.
Oh my, I wondered many times myself if the land battleship would go the way of the seaborne one, retired from service. There are signs indicating that, inclding the fact the last couple of wars have seen tanks in an AT role only briefly, and mobile liabilities afterwards. The Russians seem to be converting over to missile systems and whatnot.
Still though, until something better at destroying tanks, fortifications and holding ground comes along, tanks will stay.

Surely a small task force witha few javelins could do the job just as well? Or whatever the name of that uber-looking AT missile thingy is...

That mobile howitzer, Archer, is capable of taking out a tank in single shot too.
