there are two major faction the clans and the inner sphere. these divide themself in about 14-18 clans, depending on the time. and 5 major houses of the inner sphere. there is also comstar and it`s splinter group word of blake and some merceneraries, pirates and minor houses/ confederations.
so you have the free choice what you wanna be.

Don't play Dark Age as it is t3h gay. Play at 3050, good diversity of factions. (Before the Gray Death Legion was obliterated I think)

ya, the gray death legion nearly got annihilated in the davion-steiner civil war.
i played the tabletop for quite some time. me and friend formed an small cluster without any npc. we startet 3045 as clan wolf, made the invasion and became clan wolf-in-exile (we are wardens). after that we switched to the rpg, with different timesettings and affiliations.

some of the mechs look stupid, especially those humanoid ones that stand up straight and have heads....

About 40% of them look like that. But I would hardly call the Atlas stupid.

the tabletop is a turn bases strategy game with miniatures of military units (mostly mechs) on a hexagon playing field. role playing is kind of low in the tabletop.
the rpg is a pen-and-paper rpg you create your character and play it.
