Artillery

Mobile artillery is a key component of Blitzkrieg. Being able to move guns in support of mechanised infantry and Panzer divisions is essential to maintain overwhelming pressure on the enemy's troops and prevent offensives from bogging down. Equally, the ability to rapidly advance guns allows for newly siezed positions to be consolidated with towed anti-tank guns being brought in to solidify a position and ambush any counter-attacking enemy forces.

The PaK 36 is a 37mm anti tank gun designed to provide infantry with a practical defence against enemy armour. In reality the puny 37mm gun is under powered but since enemy tanks mostly lack sufficient protection it serves adequatly for its intended role. In fact, the nature of the weapon means it can be easily dug in and concealed making it an effective ambush weapon. Since even low calliber rounds can ruin tracks and smash drive trains the PaK 36 works well when used in conjunction with heavier weapons.

The Flakvierling is designed to provide point-defence against low flying enemy ground attack aircraft and bombers. It has four 20mm autocannons in a protected mounting. Such devastating firepower is deadly to enemy planes and can also be turned against infantry and light vehicles to defend nearby units against an assault. However its guns are far too low calliber to penetrate thicker armour and so it needs anti-tank weapons to protect it from roving enemy tank units. It is an essential to defend marshalling areas with these guns to prevent enemy planes from wiping our clusters of tanks preparing to enter combat.

FlaK cannons are huge guns designed to lob projectiles high into the air to shoot down enemy bombers. As such they can engage enemy strategic bombers with moderate success, although should definatly be supported by fighters. Their huge range and velocity makes them very potent when pressed into an anti-tank role. As such they are often used to form ad-hoc anti tank positions. They can shoot enemy tanks at long range and with great power. The 88mm FlaK cannons proved to be so successful in this role that they formed the basis for all late-war German tank armaments, first in the Tiger, and then in improved forms on the Ferdinand, Jagdpanther and Tiger IIs.
